Hawaii Island police have identified a Washington state man who died Sept. 5 after being involved in a traffic collision on Route 137 about 0.1 mile south of the 17-mile marker.
The victim was identified as 62-year-old Richard Frank Rice of Mill Creek, Wash., according to the Hawaii Police Department.
An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, but police are awaiting toxicology results before making a final determination as to the cause of death.
Puna officers responded to an 8:38 p.m. Sept. 5 call and found Rice dead within a 2015 Hyundai four-door-sedan in the middle of the roadway. The Hyundai was discovered with some damage, said Maj. Samuel Thomas, but it was not consistent with a fatal accident.
Police ask any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle between 7:45 and 8:38 p.m. or who may have additional information about the crash to call Officer Clarence Acob at 961-2332.
